4 Tips for Adult Beginners to Play Hockey For The First Time

June 27, 2022

Whether you grew up watching NHL games with your grandfather or you’re just getting into hockey now, it doesn’t matter. It’s not about where you come from or how much ice time you have logged in your life; anyone can play hockey no matter their age or athletic abilities. Adult beginners are the fastest-growing segment of adult hockey players in the country. Read on for tips that will help you get started playing for the first time and answer some frequently asked questions about playing adult hockey.

Get In The Game

If you want to improve your game or if you’re just starting out, taking an adult hockey course or class is a good idea. This way, you’ll be learning from a coach and other adult beginners who are just starting out as well. Adult hockey courses are also a great way to meet people, stay active, and challenge yourself. Our ‘Get in the Game’ sessions will help you learn the basics of hockey, such as skating and puck control, along with other skills, such as shooting and passing. The last session you’ll even play a full-fledged game, we refer to these as a Cup Game.

Practice your skating skills

Skating is the backbone of hockey. One of the best ways to get ready for your first game or just to calm the nerves before your first session is to practice skating. Our rinks have public skating sessions where you can go and practice. If you’re intimidated by an audience at first, you could contact our rink for a private lesson with a qualified skating coach.

Find a buddy to learn with you

Playing hockey with a friend or a group of people who are also new to the game will help you learn more quickly. You can help each other out, ask questions and encourage each other to keep going. When you attend a learn-to-play session, you’ll be surrounded by other adult beginners who are also trying to learn the game. Find a buddy who wants to learn with you and find a rink nearby!

Don’t be afraid to fall and get up again

This is the nature of hockey; you’re going to fall. You fall going for the puck, you fall when you miss the puck. All new skaters fall, so don’t be embarrassed or shy away from it. It is a natural part of playing hockey. Falling on the ice isn’t that bad, it is getting back up again that can be the most difficult. That’s what practice is for!

Hockey is an excellent sport for all ages and abilities, and you don’t need a lot of experience to get started. If you’re new to hockey or you’ve been away from the game for a while, use these tips to get started playing again.
